Palauans will continue asking president to reopen consulate

The group’s leader Rufino Aguon said they and the Palau youth organization on Saipan have sent a letter to President Johnson Toribiong.

The letter, he said, aims to “reinforce the importance of the consulate office.”

He said members of the Palauan community were “disappointed” to learn that except for Saipan, all other consulates of the Palau government were allocated funds so they can remain open.

Palau’s consulate on Saipan and Guam were ordered closed on Dec. 31 due to lack of funds.

Palau’s fiscal year 2011 budget later appropriated money for the consulate on Guam.

Now that the Palau government has decided not to reopen the  consulate on Saipan, Aguon said they want to know how their government can extend services to the Palauan community on island.

He said there has been no instruction from Toribiong on whether Palauans here should transact business with the Guam consulate or directly with the national government in Palau.

Aguon said  more than 2,000 Palauans on Saipan will be denied basic services such as the processing of their passports.

Without a consulate here, Aguon said Palau officials should regularly visit Saipan.
