Parents, teachers discuss peacebuilding

This topic was discussed during yesterday’s peacebuilder workshop for parents and teachers of San Antonio Elementary School at the Saipan World Resort.

Presenter Toby Y. Smith, who has been conducting a series of workshops at different schools, said parents and teachers should work together by “speaking the same language” and understanding the process of nurturing a child.

She told the 66 participants of the whole-day event that peacebuilder parents should model a desired behavior, set clear standards and expectations, and provides reason for limits and rules.

Peacebuilder parents should encourage and praise family members, and must always be positive, patient, calm, respectful and appreciative, she added.

In an interview, Smith said the workshop aimed to help parents nurture certain behaviors in their children.

Children must learn discipline, she added.

SAES Parent Teacher Association president Sia Dela Cruz said the challenge for each parent is to help their children meet school standards.

She said  team work between the parents and teachers is very important.

Kindergarten teacher Rita Carreon said the workshop taught parents and teachers to help each other in dealing with the children at home or at school.

“This will give us the technique to be peacebuilders,” she said.

Dino Taitano, a special education teacher, said respect should be given the highest importance at home and at school.

Respect, she added, is one of the vital factors in creating a peace environment.

Taitano said the workshop also allowed more parents to involved in school programs.
