Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters said 16 elementary schools will be competing this year.
“We have originally prepared only 15 Christmas trees for the contest, but we received 16 applications on our Nov. 15 deadline. We added one more tree,” Siwa said.
They had to turn down more applications from other schools.
“We are very sorry to turn some schools down but we set the deadline earlier,” Siwa said.
Participating schools this year are San Vicente Elementary School, Tanapag Elementary School, Dandan Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, Garapan Elementary School, Saipan Community School, Agape Christian School, William S. Reyes Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, Golden Harvest International School, Kagman Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, San Antonio Elementary School, Joshua Generation International Academy, Grace Christian Academy and Green Meadow School.
Judges will pick out the winners on Dec. 2. On the same day, the giant PDM Promoters Inc. Christmas Tree constructed by RNV Construction will be unveiled.
Decorations to be used by the participants must be made of recycled materials such as tin cans, plastic cans, water bottles, and others.
This year’s first, second and third placers winners will receive $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000. There will be consolation prizes for non-winners.
Last year, 14 private and public schools joined the contest. Joshua Generation International Academy was last year’s grand prize winner.
