Peleliu jungle trail opens

The trail starts at Death Valley on the road up to the Peleliu panoramic lookout, which is about 400-meter long and takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. It has been cleared of ordnance through funding from the New Zealand government.

“Our island is a living World War II museum,” Peleliu Gov. Kangichi Uchau said. “And the trail takes tourists past historical artifacts such as helmets, rice bowls, anti-aircraft guns, ammunition rail tracks, pick axes, canteens, sake and Coke bottles, and others.”

U.S. and Japanese mortars can also be seen along the trail, as well as Japanese defensive cave systems and the geologically interesting natural sink holes.

“We have printed a plasticized map of the trail for tour companies, highlighting key artifacts and sites,” Uchau added.

With sufficient notice, Peleliu government can also arrange tourists to be taken around the trail to point out artifacts and explain their historical context.
