21 parents complete Motheread programs today

CNMI Motheread program coordinator Viola Sablan Deleon Guerrero said eight participants will be awarded certificates of completion at 11 a.m. today for finishing a special course on the Adult Basic Education Program at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library in Susupe this morning.

At 6 p.m., Deleon Guerrero said 13 parents will receive their certificates of completion  at the Chalan Kanoa Head Start center.

On Nov. 30, seven parents will finish their Motheread training at Dandan Elementary School.

A literacy program introduced in the commonwealth in 1998, Motheread teaches parents how to use stories to help  children learn about the world. It emphasizes the importance of books as tool to improve academic skills and as a means of communication between parents and children.

For the school year 2009-2010, Deleon Guerrero said 183 parents and participants from the Head Start centers and 147 participants from the elementary schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota finished the Motheread program.

This school year, 84 from the Head Start centers and 45 from elementary schools finished the program.

Deleon Guerrero is optimistic that they can increase the number of participants this school year.

“Our target is to really increase participation,” she said.
