Perfect attendance for 3 BOE members

BOE Chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita, Vice Chairman Herman T. Guerrero and Secretary Marylou Ada attended all meetings, based on the board’s record.

Last year, the board held nine regular and six special meetings as well as numerous committee discussions.

Norman, a non-voting member of the board and principal of Calvary Christian Academy, did not attend the meetings on Feb. 15, May 28, July 11 and Oct. 30.

He also did not appear for the special meetings on Aug. 6, Aug. 28, Sept. 6, and Oct. 2.

Board member Galvin Deleon Guerrero of Saipan, the principal of Mt. Carmel School, had four  absences.

However, he was present  whenever the board discussed pertinent issues regarding public schools.

Rota’s Tanya Denise King was absent on  Aug. 28 and Oct. 2.

Besides Norman, the board has two other non-voting members — the representatives of students and public school teachers.

Since the end of Ambrose Bennett’s term in Jan. 2008, the teacher representative’s post has remained vacant due to some “constitutionality” issues.

The current student representative is Francine Babauta of Saipan Southern High School.

Records also showed that the 11th BOE conducted three meetings outside its office on Capital Hill.

Two of its special meetings were held at the Pacific Islands Club — on July 25 and Aug. 6 for the interview of the applicants for the commissioner of education’s post.

The board moved the opening of regular classes from August to September to coincide with the hiring of a new commissioner.

BOE fired then-Commissioner David M. Borja on June 4.

BOE also recorded one regular meeting at PIC on Feb.  15.

Some meetings and discussions called by the various BOE committee heads were held at its office, at Herman’s Bakery, and school campuses.
