Philippine consul general to finish tour of duty this month

He will leave Saipan on June 24 and head back to Manila. Consul Belinda M. Ante will be the acting consul general while Maximo’s replacement has yet to arrive.

While in Manila, Maximo said he will wait for his new diplomatic assignment.

“Each of my previous foreign assignments had their own unique features — all of them  good,” he said.

Maximo was assigned to Venezuela in 1981 to open the Philippine embassy there.

He also served as consul general in Los Angeles,  Spain, Oman and India.

For his stint in the CNMI, Maximo said he will submit a  report to the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.

He said the Philippine Consulate General has maintained a good working relationship with the CNMI government and the Filipino community.

“I am much honored to have been appointed to the CNMI,” he said, adding that his office has witnessed  the economic struggle of the commonwealth that also affected the  Filipino workers here.

Maximo said he appreciated how the CNMI government coordinated with his office, especially in dealing with problems involving Filipino workers.

The CNMI Department of Labor, he said, has been very cooperative in requesting for the repatriation of Filipino workers.

“Regarding law enforcement, whenever there are Filipino arrested, we were given the opportunity to attend to their needs,” he added.

In the CNMI, Maximo said, the Philippine Consulate General has to deal with labor and immigration  problems of Filipino workers.

“The CNMI government has been able to assist in getting previous employers to answer their obligations to their workers,” he said, adding that his office also assisted displaced workers who were ill and wanted to return to the Philippines.

The United Filipino Organization held a farewell party for Maximo last night.

Leaders and officers of the 32 association members of UFO were expected to attend, UFO president Olive O. Yana said.

She said they gave a certificate of appreciation to the consul general for his “continued support for all the programs and projects of the Filipino community, particularly UFO.”

“He has been very accommodating to us since his first year in office,” she said.
