PNG a political success, says academic

Senior research fellow in political and legal studies at the PNG National Research Institute, Dr. Ray Anere, said there have been huge economic and political improvements.

He said the country still has major law and order problems that need to be addressed, but most other issues have been resolved.

“Looking back over the past 34 years I think the major challenges, such as the Bougainville conflict…[have] been overcome,” he said.

“On the whole political stability seems to have been the big achievement in political terms.”

Independence Day celebrations are now underway across Papua New Guinea.
