PNG can feed global hunger

PNG’s Minister for Commerce and Industry Gabriel Kapris told a media conference here that China believed that if PNG could beef up its food crop produce, it could feed the world’s starving populations.

Kapris said this while farewelling a delegation of Chinese entrepreneurs who were here for last week’s China-PNG Trade and Investment Symposium in the nation’s capital.

He said PNG’s consul general. Queenie Zhou. told him in an “interesting discussion” that PNG could come to an agreement with China and also the United Nations to help build a food storage depot in the country to store food supplies to feed the world’s hungry population during disasters and other calamities.

“PNG can be one of the food basins of the world,”  Kapris said.  “We can produce food and feed the hungry throughout the world who are suffering without any food and believe China is ready to help us.”

He added, “In a very interesting discussion I had with Madam Zhou, she said PNG can reach an agreement with China and the U.N. so we can move to establish a food storage or food preservation facility in PNG where we can grow food and stock them here and supply to the needy hungry people when there’s disaster or problems affecting. This is one of the potentials we can pursue on and support our economy.”
