The JOCV program has been established in the FSM since Nov. 1989.
The JICA Volunteer Program’s objective is to provide technical cooperation and to actively support work for nation-building and human resource development in the FSM.
JICA has been dispatching volunteers to the FSM for over 20 years now, focusing mainly on the areas of education and health; but has now expanded to other fields, such as agriculture, environment, and tourism, to name just a few.
The two new JOCV members, Kazuya Nishimura who has expertise in environmental education, and Tetsuya Suizu who has expertise in science and math education, arrived here on Oct. 1.
Nishimura will be working with the Pohnpei State Environmental Protection Agency. He said, “I will try my best to do activities for the local people. I am not able to provide materially, but I am just a trigger or one to prompt things by offering myself, manpower and skill in the environmental field.”
“I, too, want to help people, that is, teach teachers and students about how useful math is in everyday life,” said Suizu. He will be posted at the Pohnpei State Department of Education, Division of Math and Science.
