Popular children’s books translated into Carolinian

These include award-winning  favorites that were translated as part of a program funded by a grant provided to the Friends of the Library by the Administration for Native Americans.

The books include “It Looks like Spilt Milk” by Charles G. Shaw, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” as retold by James Marshall, and “Peter’s Chair” by Ezra Jack Keats. They were translated into Carolinian by Rosa Warakai, one of the parents under the Motheread program.

Motheread program coordinator Viola Deleon Guerrero said  their goal is have parents bring home the books and read them with their children.

Motheread Inc. is a non-profit organization that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.

The local program offers classes in which adults learn to be story readers, writers, and storytellers.

All adults, regardless of education or reading ability, can join the classes.

For the children, the storytelling sessions provide an environment conducive to learning reading, critical thinking and skills in solving problems.
