Post 9/11 GI Bill participants urged to submit requirements early

CNMI Veterans Office executive director Ruth Coleman said the local beneficiaries are studying at Northern Marianas College.

“We don’t have the exact figure but we have quite a number of student beneficiaries at NMC,” Coleman said.

She said the Veterans Office is expediting the processing so the payments will be in time for the first due date of the spring semester payments on Feb. 1.

“We are asking for everybody’s cooperation so that Veterans Affairs could provide timely payments to all veterans and spare the students from financial hardships which some encountered during the fall term last year,” she added.

Those who are potentially eligible for the new Post-9/11 GI Bill are veterans, servicemembers, reservists, and members of the National Guard who have been on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.

This federal law provides payments for tuition and fees, housing allowance, stipend for books and supplies for the participants.

Members of the armed forces can also transfer benefits to their spouse or dependent children.
