Power outages cause DMV backlog

“The continuous power outage is hampering the processing of important transactions in our office, especially in the services area because this is where the renewal of driver’s licenses, car registration renewals and others take place,” acting Department of Public Safety Commissioner Dolores San Nicolas said.

She added that applications and renewals of driver’s licenses, car registrations and others are piling up due to the power outages.

According to San Nicolas,  DMV clients suffer the impact as they have to make several trips to the division office before they can finally accomplish their transactions.

“We are asking the motorists to please examine their driver’s licenses and vehicle registration cards and see if they can come in when the power is on so the transactions can be finished,” San Nicolas said.

She said the officers of DMV understand the plight of motorists.

“This is not easy because most of the people who go to renew their licenses and conduct other transactions don’t have much spare time, or the gas to spend in making several trips,” San Nicolas said.

She said DMV is asking the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to give them at least four hours of uninterrupted power in the morning to do their services and give them time to advise their clients when to come back.

Some people who live far from DMV will have to spend more on gas.

“Like CUC, we are helpless and it is beyond our control when the power goes off,” San Nicolas said.

DMV, she added, wants to buy a generator but has insufficient funds.

“We have to come up with about roughly $20,000 to buy one generator, including the actual cost, fuel, installation and other expenses,” she said.

She added that DMV has a limited budget.

“We cannot just revise the budget and add a generator in our priorities for now,” she said.
