“At 7:20 a.m., the power plant 1 was required to shutdown engine no. 2 due to abnormal sounds coming from [its] cylinder no. 15,” Commonwealth Utilities Corp. Executive Director Antonio S. Muna explained.
Muna said the breakdown of engine #2 resulted in a decrease of power generation at the power plant down to 13 megawatts.
CUC power generation status report shows that the plant facility was short of 12.7-mw of power to service the communities on island.
Due to the break down of another engine, Muna said, CUC continued its load shedding operation on certain areas.
He said power plant crewmembers tried to replace the damaged exhaust valves of engine #2 last night, adding the crewmembers were only able to complete the repair of engine #6 last night.
Engine #6 suffered a mechanical problem on its turbocharger unit due to a water contamination in its lube oil system on Tuesday.
“The repairs of both of these engines [2 and 6] will increase the plant’s generation capacity by 12 megawatts and assist in meeting the island’s [power] demand,” Muna stated.
Load shedding started at 8 a.m. and ended at 10 p.m., affecting the entire grid of Feeders 2 and 7, and entire grid of Kiyas 1, 2 and 4.
Other CUC field facilities were also taken offline like Feeder 3: 3rd Partial, Feeder 1: 2nd Partial, and Feeder 4: 2nd Partial.
All Feeders and Kiyas were affected twice yesterday on different time frames, except for the entire grid of Kiya 4, which was turned off only once between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
