PSS to conduct special education workshop

Carol Kosnitsky, a special education and RTI consultant, will be on island as the main speaker in the workshop.

She has spent many years as a special education teacher, administrator, and leader, in large, small, rural, and suburban schools.

She will educate PSS personnel and parents as she brings a great depth of experience and compassion that will be shared in our community to enhance education for our special needs children.

The coming school year 2010-11 brings an opportunity for parents to get immensely involved in their child’s educational path.

“Understanding their individual educational programs, or IEPs, that will be defined by specialists and carried out by our school administrators, counselors and SpED contact teachers, require parent’s involvement. We encourage our parents to participate in this workshop that will help them understand the purpose and the type of services offered for each child’s individual needs through the IEPs,” stated Dr. Rita A Sablan, commissioner of education.

PSS personnel will participate in the workshop sessions slated for Aug. 30-31.

This will allow further knowledge to preparing proper IEPs and establish connection to the PSS curriculum for student advancement.

The parents workshop will be held on Sept. 1 at the Pacific Islands Club from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This workshop will enable parents to understand the purpose of an IEP and how they contribute to the process for determining the necessary services for their child. It also allows the parent to understand how they can monitor the progress as they collaborate with the PSS personnel in their child’s plan,” stated Laura Brown, assistant coordinator, SpED program.

PSS and the Board of Education want to ensure that all children, including those with disabilities requiring special needs, are prepared to be successful as they leave the system.

“These workshops will ensure that our people are trained and ready to administer proper learning programs for all children” Sablan.

The workshop has limited seating. For more information,  contact Donna Flores at 237-3015.
