Public elementary schools to change report card system

The current system  uses the percent average as grade points, but the new report card will use number 1 for beginner, 2 for developing, 3 for proficient and 4 for excellent.

For example, a grade of 99 percent in the current report card will be equivalent to 4 in the new system.

Villogmez said the new benchmarks will help parents determine where their children are in terms of learning.

A portfolio explaining why students receive the benchmarks will be presented to the parents, she added.

Besides WSR, Sinapalo, Koblerville and San Vicente are the elementary schools already using the standards-based report card system.

PSS is giving the rest of its elementary schools at least two school years to transition to the  new system.

“We are still in the piloting stage,” Villagomez said. “We have yet to see how this program will work…but we will slowly get used to it.”

All public elementary schools should be using the new system by school year 2011-2012.
