Smokers and substance abusers who have already given up their bad habits are sharing their experiences with residents through flyers distributed around the islands.
Frances Sablan Ramon, a tobacco chewer of 25 years, said everyone should choose life and health.
Jeffrey Flores, another former smoker, said it’s hard to quit but it is possible.
Maria Aldan Pierce said smoking had been her companion for about 25 years already but she let go of the habit three years ago.
“It was hard — having tried and failed so many times but if I can do it, believe me, anyone can,” she added.
The Community Guidance Center said the benefits of quitting include a decrease in blood pressure and pulse rate, the oxygen level in blood returns to normal, improvement in the quitter’s ability to smell and taste, and a significant reduction in the risk of a heart attack.

The free nine-week cycle program is held at the center’s office on Navy Hill every Monday.
