Power 99 station manager Tina Palacios said the event did not turn out the way they wanted it to.
“It was okay but not great,” she added.
The weather was a disappointment especially because Power 99 exerted a lot of effort to make the event a successful one, she said.
Twenty-five contestants joined the two wheels and four wheels car competitions.
They competed for the six categories — two-door and four-door combined, two-wheel extreme, Shell burnout, minis-SUV-trucks, sound-off and best of show overall.
But the competition for soundoff and burnout was cancelled due to the weather.
“The road was very slippery and the sound system would have gotten wet and that would have posed a high risk to the participants.” Palacios said.
Each of the winners were awarded $500:
• James Fleming, two-door and four-door category
• Cedric Palacios, Shell Marianas 2 wheel extreme
• Joey Pangelinan, best of minis-SUV-trucks
James Fleming, for his part, received $1,000 for winning Shell Marianas Best of Show Over All Award.
Hard work
Palacios said the planning of the event took three months and took a lot of hardwork.
It included radio promotion, securing permits from government agencies, including permits for road closure and the use of the site.
They also had to inform shops near the place of the venue about the road closure.
They had to order t-shirts, hats, pins, promotional items and other giveaways as well as raise funds for the other prizes.
Palacios said the weather would not have been a crucial factor if only there was an indoor venue for events like the car show.
But Power 99 is still grateful for the help it received from the CNMI people who joined and and contributed to the event, Palacios said.
“I thank the people of the CNMI for their loyalty to us and for making our radio station the number one on the island,” she added.
Shell Marianas, IT&E, 67 Zero Rock Steady Shop, Docomo Pacific, UBA, U2 Collection, Mega Byte were the sponsors of the car show.
Power 99 also expressed appreciation for the assistance and cooperation of the Department of Public Works, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., the Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Section, the Council for Arts & Culture, the Carolinian Affairs Office, the Marianas Visitors Authority and the brown tree snake section.
