This was according to Tech. Sgt. Dayne Thomas of the 369th Recruiting Squadron based on Guam who is on island to conduct a pre-screening for potential members of the U.S. Air Force.
Thomas, who arrived here on Tuesday, said they got a positive response as evidenced by over 60 individuals who showed up for the pre-screening and qualifying of potential applicants since Wednesday.
He said although for some of the applicants, joining the Air Force has been a lifelong dream, some turned to it for economic reasons.
But only eight of the over 60 who showed up will be going to Guam to proceed with the applications, Thomas said.
These were the applicants who passed all the requirements.
Thomas said the applicants were required to get a score of at least 50 in the military entrance examinations being administered twice a month at the Army Reserve Center in Puerto Rico.
To qualify for the Air Force, Thomas said applicants must be 17 to 27 years old, with a high school diploma an no medical issues. Applicants must also have a good moral character.
He said they have no limit as to the number of applicants each year.
“My visit here on island is to promote the U.S. Air Force and to inform the people that the U.S. Air Force is recruiting applicants,” he said.
Alexis Bowie, 18 and a graduate of Marianas High School, said she always wanted to join the Air Force but the economic hardship prompted her to be one of the applicants.
“I realized that times are hard and I may not be able to afford a college education. I also do not want to go into loans, so applying for theAir Force could be my means of fulfilling my dreams to serve the island,” Bowie said.
She added that she was also encouraged by friends who are already with the Air Force.
“I have heard nothing but encouragements, and I’m glad for the chance to be able to apply for the U.S. Air Force,” she said.
