Assistant Public Defender Adam Miles will be moving back to California, while Bertha Camacho is to start with her new job as a docket clerk in the U.S. District Court for the NMI.
Assistant Public Defender Michael C. Brown has left the PDO and is now studying medicine in Virginia.
Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Petersburg said he has accepted a job, also as a prosecutor, in New Mexico.
He said he is leaving the AGO this August for “personal reasons.”
Assistant Attorney General Meaghan Hassel-Shearer is also leaving the AGO civil division next month.
In an e-mail to Variety, Miles said, “I am leaving to move back home to the states. I’ve been out here for three and a half years and while my wife and I love Saipan we just felt like it was time to go home.”
He said his last day of employment is Aug. 1.
Miles said he is moving back to San Diego, California, “That is where my wife and I are originally from.”
Miles said he “went through all open cases with the remaining attorneys and made sure that there was a smooth transition.”
“Working at the Public Defender’s Office granted me the opportunity to gain a large amount of court and trial experience in a very short period. I was lucky enough to work with a great team of experienced attorneys who were always willing to answer my questions and help me out,” Miles said.
Immediately after finishing law school and passing the California Bar Exam, Miles worked as a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Kenneth L. Govendo.
“Clerking for Judge Govendo was an invaluable experience. It allowed me to gain a better understanding of a judge’s perspective and to see the decision making process firsthand,” Miles said.
“Living and working in the CNMI is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s one of the most beautiful places on earth with the best weather and the friendliest people,” Miles added.
There are three remaining PDO lawyers: Chief Public Defender Adam Hardwicke, Assistant Public Defenders Richard Miller and Douglas Hartig.
