In an interview, Cabrera said the Saipan Zoning Law of 2008 has many provisions that hinder potential investments.
The Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation unanimously approved yesterday House Local Bill 17-50 which rezones five areas on Saipan into other land use categories.
Cabrera’s bill will rezone properties in Chalan Kanoa, Chalan Galaide on Navy Hill and three other areas from village residential to village commercial.
He also wants some village residential areas to be mixed commercial, and certain rural areas designated as mixed commercials.
Cabrera, R-Saipan, said there are major developments being planned right now on Saipan. One is a proposed condominium project on Navy Hill and the other is on Capital Hill.
Rep. Stanley T. Torres, Ind.-Saipan, offered a floor amendment that will repeal some zoning law provisions, but his colleagues said he should introduce a separate piece of legislation.
