Rota council to pursue sports programs

“We are strongly supporting youth and adult sports,” he added.

These programs, he said, are closely coordinated with the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, the mayor’s office and the island’s legislative delegation.

At present, he said the ongoing Little League is well supported by the municipal government and  community.

Hocog said they are also considering introducing other seasonal ball games for the youth and adults.

Officials on Rota, he said, are bringing off-island coaches and sports professionals to conduct clinics.

These program, he added, will not only establish solidarity and help develop residents physically, but it will also allow them to excel.

He believes there are potential athletes on Rota that can participate  in events held abroad.

But he said they need ample financial support and manpower to implement their sports programs.

Hocog at the same time said Rota now has new license boat operators.

At least 10 residents were certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to operate commercial boats, he added.

“This will boost our tourism industry since the certified boaters can now transport tourists,” he said. “These certified boaters can also find employment in tourist-oriented businesses.”
