The annual PREL scholarships were established to increase the number of qualified teachers in the United States-affiliated Pacific region.
Manglona received an Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Guam Community College in May and is currently taking additional courses at GCC as she pursues a bachelor’s degree from the University of Guam.
“My plan with the scholarship is to use it as I further my education in receiving a B.A. in Elementary Education at UOG,” Manglona said, adding that that she chose her major because of her passion for working with young children.
“I view them being at a stage that is very important with regard to how much knowledge they develop throughout the rest of their educational years,” she said. “This is the time where they go through many changes and I want to be a part of that change.”
Other 2009 recipients of the Pacific Teacher Scholarship include Kristine Cruz of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; Charity Faith Ileyagisiug from Yap; and Albina Riklon and Zin Thomas of the Marshall Islands.
PREL is an independent, nonprofit corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S. affiliated Pacific islands, the continental U.S., and countries throughout the world.
PREL bridges the gap between research, theory, and practice in education and works collaboratively with schools and school systems to provide curriculum development, assessment and evaluation.
