Lourdes Manglona, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ resident director on Rota, said the celebration will give importance to the coconut tree and the role it plays in local culture and traditions.
This year’s theme is “The coconut tree and culture” and the event is expected to draw participants from Guam and Saipan.
Residents will hold a demonstration on coconut oil making and various uses of coconut by-products such as medication, alcohol, juice and shelter.
“We intend to promote the coconut tree and our culture in this affair,” Manglona told Variety, adding that different activities, including displays of coconut products, will be held at the Cultural Center on Rota.
There will also be an essay writing contest for students.
The submission of entries started earlier this month and the topic is on the importance of coconut oil to local culture.
Manglona said there will be five judges from the community and two from the Inetnon Amot Natibu group.
