Rotary Club vocational services director Jeff Boyer yesterday said they are aiming to send over the dictionaries for distribution on Rota sometime this week before the end of the school year.
Boyer said they will do the distribution with the assistance of the Public School System.
“We have distributed over 900 copies of dictionaries to third grade students in public schools on Saipan and Tinian this school year,” Boyer said.
Club president Glen Perez said they plan to continue with the distribution of dictionaries when school opens in September.
“We hope to do the distribution earlier next school year so the students will have more time to use them,” he added.
This is the first time for the Rotary Club of Saipan to distribute dictionaries under the program designed especially for third grade students as part of the club’s vocational services program.
Early this year the Rotary Club purchased the dictionaries through the assistance of the donations of generous community members who provided funds for buying and shipping.
The club is also hoping to extend the dictionary distribution to private schools in the future.
“For now, we will concentrate on public schools first because of budgetary constraints but as soon as funds will allow, we will include the third graders in private schools,” Boyer said.
The dictionary drive project for third graders is a nationally recognized program also adopted by other Rotary Club chapters across the nation with the goal of helping third graders become active readers, creative thinkers and good writers.
