He said Rota High School celebrated its monthly flag assembly to commend Mendiola.
“This is a great honor to the school and will set a good example and encouragement to the students and the community,” he said.
The flag assembly, he added included a recreation of the commissioning ceremony which was conducted by Lt. Col. John Howerton, professor of military science of the University of Guam’s ROTC program.
The special ceremony was witnessed by Mendiola’s wife, Anna, and his parents, Brian and Evelyn.
Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola, in his congratulatory remarks, lauded 2nd Lt. Mendiola for serving the nation.
The mayor was accompanied by his wife Estrella.
Also present during the ceremony were Rota Municipal Council member Prudencio Manglona Jr. and his wife Sharon, former Sen. Edward U. Maratita, former Rep. Antonio O. Quitugua and his wife Diane, Public School System State Board PTSA vice president Dee Taimanao, Rota High School PTA president Therese Hizon, the student body, faculty and staff.
Atalig said 2nd. Lt. Mendiola, in his remarks, stressed the importance of pursuing one’s education, commitment to family, and the preservation of the indigenous language.
“The Rota High School administration and the faculty are hopeful that the Feb. 1st flag ceremony will inspire each and every student to believe that they can fulfill their dreams and aspirations; all that is required is determination, hard work, and the belief that you can succeed,” Atalig said.
