Saipan gets $128,000 for emergency food, shelter programs

The selection was made by the emergency food and shelter national board program that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA National Council of Churches of Christ and the United Way of America.

“The award is based upon the total number of unemployed individuals in our jurisdiction,” local board member Lauri Ogumoro of Karidat said.

The local board is made up of the mayor of Saipan, Karidat, American Red Cross, Division of Youth Services and the Veterans Affairs Office.

Ogumoro said the local board will determine how the funds appropriated by the U.S Congress are to be distributed among local emergency food and shelter programs.

Local agencies chosen to receive funds must be a private voluntary non-profit organization or a unit of the government, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination and should have demonstrated capability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs.

If they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

For more information and to apply for the grant call Ogumoro at 234-6981 or visit her at the Karidat office.
