Saipan Lion’s Club: Don’t vandalize the bus stops!

VANDALIZED and full of trash. The condition of the bus stop in lower Navy hill near Twins Market II just after two weeks of renovation and painting is frustrating the Saipan Marianas Lions Club members.

“We just painted it two weeks ago but when we visited it this week to check its condition. We were surprised to see that the bus stop was vandalized,” The clubs’ lobal membership chair Lolita Velasco told Variety.

Velasco said the group wants to do their part in making the island clean and beautiful, but some residents are “stubborn”.

Last September, the club members cleaned up several bus stops which include the one being vandalized now. Of all the bus stops they have cleaned and repainted, Velasco said it is only the bus stop in Lower Navy Hill and nearby Twins Market II that is being vandalized.

To fix the situation, the club cleaned and repainted it earlier this month but was vandalized again several days after it was repainted.

“We did fundraise activities and successfully generated funds which we allocate specifically for this project. The organization is saddened that it is always vandalized,” she said.

She said nobody knows who is vandalizing and littering at the bus stop but she is hoping that it is not the children who use.

“We want to have a safe waiting area for our children. If it is the children, we hope that they will not destroy what we have made beautiful for them,” she said.

She is encouraging community members to stop vandalizing and throwing trash on bus stops.

“We must share the same vision for our island home. At Lion’s Club it is our goal to serve the community and part of that service is to help in maintaining a clean and beautiful environment for the tourists and the residents,” she said.

It is unlawful for any person and/or persons to vandalize any public or private property. Anyone caught vandalizing will be fined a minimum of $250 up to $10,000. Authorities will also impose 40 to 120 hours of community service to those who are caught vandalizing.
