Saipan mayor, DPW working on animal shelter facility design

Mayor Donald G. Flores said his office may also ask the Northern Marianas Trades Institute to provide manpower for the project.

The institute has been training students in carpentry, masonry and electrical programs.

This week, Flores said, they will conduct a cleanup drive at the facility previously occupied by  Saipan Manufacturers Inc. in Lower Base.

The Department of Public Lands allowed the mayor’s office to use public property for the program for a one-year term, renewable every year.

The mayor’s office already secured $145,000 for the animal shelter project and has been removing dead animals from public roads.

Since January, they have already removed 258 dead animals, Flores said.

“We continue to get calls from the community regarding dead animals on roads,” he added.

As soon as the animal shelter facility opens, the mayor said they will implement the dog licensing and tagging program.

In the meantime, he encourages pet owners to ensure that their animals do not harm anyone.

“This should be everybody’s concern,” Flores said, referring to stray dogs. Call his office at 234-6208 or 235-7304 for more information.
