Saipan mayor says some employees should be allowed to work

On Friday, Flores said his main office started observing the government shutdown that was the result of the Legislature’s failure to pass a new budget for fiscal year 2011.

The mayor’s office has 32-full-time employees.

Flores said his office must continue to provide “essential services” such as delivering water to the community and removing dead animals from public roads.

“The mayor’s office is mandated by the Constitution. If there’s a wake or funeral we’re supposed the prepare the ground and provide services,” he told the Variety.

Flores said the mayor’s field office in Lower Base remains open and the community can still call their hotline number for assistance at 322-6270.

Saipan mayor’s field operations director John Aldan said his men are willing to continue to work.
