Saipan post office says mail, packages ‘safe and secure’

“We at the Postal Service agree with radio show host Rovel T. Caberos of Magic 100.3 FM, a customer who complained of losing two netbook computers last week, that mail theft should not be tolerated,” Medina said in an email yesterday.

He said the Postal Inspection Service has begun conducting an investigation into Caberos’ missing computers as soon as it was brought to their attention.

“While I cannot comment on the state of the investigation, I want to assure all of our Saipan customers that the safety and security of the mail is our number one priority,” Medina said.

He said over 200,000 pieces of parcel mail arrive at the Saipan post office each year, and although mail thefts are an extremely rare occurrence, they realize that even one is too many.

“Any one theft is an unwarranted burden and/or inconvenience to a postal customer.  Our goal is to completely eliminate such incidents.  With our Postal Inspection Service on the case, I am hopeful that we will be able to resolve the current incident and confident that every effort will be made in the future to prevent mail thefts,” Medina said.

Following the publication of Caberos’ complaint in the Marianas Variety, the newspaper’s website drew several comments from readers who claimed that Caberos was not alone and a lot of the people in the community have also lost their valuables at the local post office.

Some complained of losing cameras, laptops and iPods.

Medina assures the community that the employees of the postal service are honest, trustworthy and hard-working.

“I can assure you that we will continue to provide our customers with the best service possible,” he said.
