He started his preparatory school in Sister Remedios School and spent up to third grade at Mount Carmel School.
He now attends Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, California, San Diego County as a 10th grader.
Macaranas was nominated by his teacher and selected by People to People as a student ambassador.
He will travel to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in summer 2010 for 20 days.
“I am very excited about this trip since I have never traveled internationally,” he said.
Student nominees were interviewed and submitted numerous requirements.
“I was very lucky to get selected since there were several students nominated throughout San Diego. I was also honored to be chosen and to represent my culture in this program,” Macaranas said.
Fundraising efforts are being conducted by his parents Anthony and Cindy Macaranas to assist in his travel and tuition for the entire program.

Student ambassadors learn about other cultures, engage in fun activities, and meet local citizens.
They come from diverse backgrounds, but share common traits: a curious and adventurous spirit, an open mind and heart, the desire to learn about other cultures and people, and the belief in President Eisenhower’s vision that each person can make a difference and help to achieve peace through understanding.
People to People has a clear mission: to provide students with unparalleled access to people and places beyond compare, preparing them for success in a globalized world by making friends locally and globally.
Student ambassadors visit schools, experience homestays, absorb world culture through firsthand exploration, meet with government experts, and enjoy unique insider access to significant people and places.
