Samoa reveals details of land purchase deal

APIA (Pacnews) — The Samoan government has revealed details of a land purchase deal after complaints that information about the arrangement had not been made public. The government has paid $4 million for 2800 acres from Salelologa village in negotiations, which Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele said were completed about three months ago.

The former opposition leader, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese, said the land deal should have been publicized to allow input from those with rights to the land.

He said the danger is that owners who have not been consulted might complain, placing at risk the large amount of public funds already paid.

But Tuilaepa said all legal avenues had been satisfied.
