San Roque lot cleared for solar power plant

The project, according to its proponent, Japan Solar System Corp., will demonstrate a “quiet, clean and safe” solar power plant on island. Because it is just a pilot plant, it is expected to produce 220 to 440 kilowatts of power only.

Solar System Corp. is among the 20 companies that want to provide the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. with renewable energy.

After being given the flexibility to deal with independent power producers, CUC is now accepting proposals from interested companies.

Solar System Corp. director Tamio S. Clark said in an interview that the establishment of a pilot plant in San Roque will ensure that things will work out smoothly when renewable energy power is fed into the CUC grid.

The pilot plant will also serve as a showcase to give the public the opportunity to see how it works.

As soon as the property is cleared of vegetation, Clark said the installation of solar panels will follow and the pilot project should be done by December.

When  it is completed, CUC can hook up through the nearest power pole in the area.

Clark said the project will also provide them data disclosing the production cost and the efficiency of the type of equipment they are using.

Their company, Clark added, pioneered  solar power production in Micronesia.

“Solar System Corp. expresses appreciation for the assistance and encouragement it has received from the Zoning Office, CUC, the Legislature and the administration.  These offices and individuals have shown that the CNMI really does want renewable energy in the islands,” Clark said.
