“There is a pressing need to initiate a vocational trade institute on Rota as the demand for skilled tradesmen continues to grow and our people continue to be unemployed for the lack of skills in that area or field,” Santos told Independent Sen. Juan M. Ayuyu, the Rota legislative delegation chairman.
Santos, Ind.-Rota, said she had the opportunity to visit the Northern Marianas Trades Institute in Lower Base on Saipan.
She and NMTI president Tony Pelligrino toured the premises where classroom instructions were being conducted.
Based on her meeting with Pelligrino, Santos said there appears to be a “golden opportunity” awaiting Rota in the program initiated by NMTI.
Santos wants Rota officials to meet with Northern Marianas College, the Department of Public Lands and Pelligrino.
“We cannot overemphasize the necessity of a trades program to commence on our island and in doing so, we can assist our youths and people to be trained and employed in these fields, thus, becoming productive and contributing citizens in our community,” she told Ayuyu.
