Schools get free benches from summer campers

They are the summer campers of the faith-based nongovernment organization Turning Point Learning Center, which helps the youth find meaningful ways to spend their free time as well as to learn virtues and values.

San Nicolas of Tinian said making benches was labor-intensive and difficult but the campers were happy to contribute something to their community.

Ten of the benches were turned over yesterday to Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School and the other 10 will go to Tinian Junior and High School.

GTC principal Charlotte Camacho said the benches will be very useful when classes resume next month as students can use them.

She said the campers demonstrated what she termed as “great partnership with the community.”

Mike Brazel, the center’s president, said the project was made possible through Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service, Triple J and Saipan Shipping.

The Turning Point Learning Center was formed in 2006 mainly by educators to help teenagers become caring individuals and develop strong self-esteem.

Brazel said they are mostly focused on school dropouts who need the most guidance.
