Search for missing plane called off

PAPEETE (Pacnews) — The search for the plane which disappeared last week in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia has been called off.

France’s High Commissioner Michel Mathieu, said he will rely on the “eyes and ears” of the Tuamotu inhabitants. The planes and helicopters from the French Army will remain in Tahiti in case there are any reports of sightings.

“Since the plane disappeared, people are aware that it is important to look around them wherever they go,” said Edouard Temere, the mayor of Kauehi, an island located near Katiu where the ill-fated plane is believed to have gone down.

The plane was carrying five people, including four prominent pro-autonomy Fetia Api politicians, Boris Leontieff and two Fetia Api candidates for the next French general elections, Arsen Tuairau and his back up, Ferfine Besseyre.
