Senate confirms Villanueva’s nomination

THE Senate has confirmed the nomination of Finance Secretary Frankie B. Villanueva.

The Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigation yesterday conducted an “emergency” meeting after being informed that the 90-day appointment of Villanueva on an acting capacity would lapse on May 12, Senate President Paul A. Manglona said.

“The committee addressed the matter and we then conducted a session at 2 p.m. He was unanimously confirmed. There were no serious objections to his appointment,” said Manglona, R-Rota.

Three members of the committee, Sens. Thomas P. Villagomez, R-Saipan; Ricardo S. Atalig, R-Rota; and Diego M. Songao, Covenant-Rota, failed to attend the session as they were on an official trip to Palau.

According to Manglona, there is no question regarding Villanueva’s qualifications and capability to lead the Department of Finance. Villanueva is a former secretary of commerce.

“The committee did not find it difficult to confirm his appointment as they know that he will be a competent finance secretary. Gov. (Juan N.) Babauta made a good choice. We wish him success in the next four years and may he be instrumental in revitalizing the CNMI’s economy,” the Senate president added.

On Monday, Manglona said the Senate will hold a session to look into other nominations and address pending legislation.
