Senate Bill 16-37 was authored by Sen. Joseph M. Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian, who said there is a need to reserve the two areas for homestead and commercial purposes in order to generate funds and stimulate economic investments.
Chalan Famalao’an covers approximately 140 hectares.
The 100 hectares of Chalan Famalao’an “is hereby reserved for commercial or other purposes as determined and approved jointly by the mayor of Tinian, the Tinian Municipal Council, and the Tinian legislative delegation,” according to the bill says.
Forty hectares is reserved for agricultural or residential homesteads.
According to the bill, Pina, which covers 384 hectares, is reserved for agricultural homestead lots.
S.B. 16-37 provides a minimum of one-half hectare to be apportioned for each agricultural homestead.
The Department of Public Lands and the mayor of Tinian are the assigned authorities in the survey and designation of boundaries.
The bill has been transmitted to the House of Representatives for action.
