Senate panel won’t review executive nominees

These include the boards of the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Retirement Fund, the Commonwealth Election Commission and the Civil Service Commission.

The committee chairman, Sen. Francisco Q. Cruz, R-Tinian, said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has not been nominating anyone from Rota or Tinian.

Last Monday, Cruz informed Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, that his committee would no longer entertain executive appointments for commonwealth-wide boards or commission.

He told Manglona that Rota and Tinian submitted to the governor a list of people from the two islands who could fill vacancies on boards or commissions but none of them were nominated.

Cruz said the lack of Rota and Tinian appointees deprives the two islands equal representation.

In an interview yesterday, Cruz said his committee is not trying to get back at the governor.

“We just want to stress the importance of equal representation among the three senatorial districts on  commonwealth boards and commissions,” he said.

“It is regrettable, but we must understand that it is imperative and unequivocally important to have a balanced body in which all districts are well represented to ensure a sound and prudent decision-making process,” Cruz added.
