Edith Deleon Guerrero
THE CNMI’s first Democrat — and female — Senate president is leaving her party.
In a statement, the local Democratic Party said Deleon Guerrero had informed the party president, Jonathan P. Cabrera, “that she will be leaving the party after her current term ends.”
Deleon Guerrero’s four-year term ends in Jan. 2025.
Cabrera said “she has served the people of the third senatorial district with distinction, and we will always be grateful for her service and commitment to the people of the CNMI.”
Asked for comment, Deleon Guerrero said:
“My respect for the party officers in their personal or official capacities will always be there. Most especially the supporters that gave me the honor to represent their interests and this I have not wavered from.
“Much has happened that made me revisit the principles that I stand on and re-examine the fueled relentless animosities.
“I felt it best that I remove myself from such and choose to remain focused on my promise to work for and in the best interest of the CNMI and its people.”
Reelection bids
The NMI Democratic Party also announced the reelection bids of incumbent House members Denita Kaipat Yangetmai and Vicente Castro Camacho of Precinct 3, and Diego Vincent Fejeran Camacho of Precinct 1.
The other House Democrat, Floor Leader Edwin Propst, is running for the U.S. Congress this year.
The party said Yangetmai, Vicente Camacho and Diego Vincent Camacho want to continue serving the people of their respective precincts.
Cabrera said those interested in joining the party and its upcoming presidential primary or are interested in running on the Democratic slate in November should go to www.nmidems.org/.
