SHEFA checks released today

The 164 checks represent $494,500 in scholarship awards for 302 students in field of study and 30 grant-in-aid programs for 2010, he said.

Starting at 10 a.m. today, SHEFA will start distributing the checks to the recipients, he said.

Finance, however, has yet to process the checks amounting to $540,000  for the 2010 incentive program, he added.

According to Hofschneider, SHEFA will submit to Finance  this week a request for the release of 182 grant-in-aid checks  for spring 2011 totaling $182,800.

Variety learned that it will be another payless Friday for government workers this week because Finance had to release the SHEFA checks.

Asked for comment, Hofschneider said: “It is rather puzzling why payroll will be burdened with the disbursement when the source of funding for the SHEFA financial assistance is authorized by local law.”

The scholarship program is funded by the license fees collected from Saipan’s poker and pachinko machines.
