SHEFA will not act as guarantor

However, he added, SHEFA will continue to ask the Department of Finance to release pending scholarship checks to  recipients.

“It’s up to the student to work some arrangements with the school while we continue asking Finance to issue the checks,” he told Variety.

Since 2010 fall semester, Finance has yet to release some scholarship checks to its recipients on-island and off-island.

Hofschneider said 304 students have yet to get their scholarship checks of $1,500 each.

There are also 31 students, 26 on-island and five  studying abroad, who have yet to get their grant-in-aid.

Moreover,  317 students have yet to receive their incentives.

Hofschneider said SHEFA already submitted four listings for funding release on Jan. 20 for $41,200; $201,000 on Jan. 25; $255,000 on Feb. 1; and $294,000 on Feb. 18.

SHEFA has yet to submit the second list of funding requests amounting to $236,000 for the incentives of 118 students.

Hofschneider said Finance has yet to release $1,203,700 to close the account for fall 2010.

In fall 2010, SHEFA requested a total of $2,282,700 but Finance released $1,315,000 only, he added.

He said they will wait for the release of all pending checks for the fall semester before SHEFA will start submitting lists for the funding release of spring 2011.

SHEFA is funded by Saipan poker fee collections which have been declining over the years as the economy continues to deteriorate.
