THE Society for Human Resource Management-NMI Chapter’s general membership meeting in May will focus on helping businesses tap into a powerful local resource: the Workforce Investment Agency under the CNMI Department of Labor.
Titled “Leveraging WIA to Fill Workforce Needs,” the session will feature guest speakers Frances Torres, WIA director, and Colleen Diaz, federal program coordinator, who will share how the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act programs can support local employers in overcoming workforce shortages, upskilling employees, and connecting with qualified jobseekers.
WIA serves as the CNMI’s primary access point for workforce development services funded under WIOA. Their programs play a critical role in addressing employment gaps, supporting training initiatives, and strengthening the local talent pipeline-key priorities amid the CNMI’s current economic and labor challenges.
Guest speakers will cover:
• An overview of WIA and its employer-focused services
• How to access training subsidies and work experience programs
• Support for hiring, recruitment, and placement
• Strategies for long-term workforce development
“This is the kind of resource many businesses don’t realize is available to them,” said SHRM-NMI Chapter President Roman Tudela. “WIA is not just for jobseekers — it’s a tool that can help employers close staffing gaps, reduce training costs, and build a more resilient workforce. This session is about connecting our business community with that opportunity.”
