Six Marines injured in brawl

The six Marines were treated and released from Naval Hospital and the incident is being investigated by Naval Criminal Investigative Service, said Lt. Jodie Cornell, JRM public affairs officer.

The fight occurred on the same day the Dubuque arrived on Guam. The incident happened before midnight on June 2, when six Marines entered the Naval Base via a commercial taxi en route to the ship after they returned from shore leave, said Cornell.

“During an alleged altercation some of the Marines suffered minor wounds for which they were treated and released from U.S. Naval Hospital Guam,” Cornell said via e-mail.

He said the altercation was “an isolated incident.”

The NCIS investigation will be conducted within the ship’s unit which will determine what disciplinary action will be taken.

Cornell could not say whether the ship along with two other amphibious assault ships were en route to Indonesia as a result of President Obama’s upcoming trip which was later cancelled by the White House.

A local government official, who was briefed on the incident, told Variety that because of the incident, Rear Adm.

Paul J. Bushong, commander of JRM, ordered the suspension of shore leave of 3,000 Marines and sailors.

The USS Dubuque is part of the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The Dubuque, along with the USS Pearl Harbor and USS Peleliu docked on Guam for supplies.

The three ships are currently on a seven-month deployment. The ships have since left Guam, Cornell said.
