Solomons workers to work in Taiwan

Radio Australia reports that the Taiwanese ambassador to Solomon Islands, George Chen, said an agreement on the terms and conditions of the labor scheme is now being worked out.

He said the two governments are expected to sign an agreement on the labor scheme soon, but it will be implemented by private interests.

Chen said Taiwan has been importing labor from Southeast Asia countries.

He added that Taiwan has also proposed the scheme to Solomon Islands because it is a strong ally in the Pacific.

The two countries will need to sign the memorandum of understanding at the government level.

Chen said following the signing, the relevant companies or agents who are interested in implementing the project to talk to each other and to work out the details.

Unskilled laborers from the Solomon Islands are likely to be recruited in construction and in the services sector like maids, hospital helpers and so forth.
