PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) — Michael Somare may lose his East Sepik provincial seat in the Papua New Guinea elections, Radio Australia reports.
Somare fell behind in the count yesterday for the seat he’s held for the past 34 years.
Independent candidate Allan Bird caught up and passed Somare as the count went on in five of the six open electorates that make up the East Sepik regional seat.
Bird was on more than 18,000 votes to Somare’s 16,500 late last night.
Meanwhile, elections officials had yet to post any votes from Angoram, the open seat held by Somare’s son, Arthur, who is the East Sepik governor.
