A SIX-year-old girl was injured after she was struck by a vehicle during a hit and run incident in Chalan Kanoa on Friday afternoon.
The girl sustained multiple scratches on the arms, legs, right wrist and forearm. She also suffered abrasions and punctured wound on the face, according to the Department of Public Safety.
DPS spokesman Pete C. Muna said the suspect was described as male Caucasian.
Muna said the girl was playing with some rocks in the open lot near their house when a light blue pick-up truck backed out from the roadway and struck her.
The girl fell to the ground and was scratched by the muffler and other parts of the truck on her back.
The driver moved the truck forward, got out and helped her up from the ground. After saying “I’m sorry” to her, the operator got back into the truck and left the scene. The driver apparently had a passenger at the time.
The victim ran to her house and told her mother about the accident. She was later transported to the hospital and treated at the emergency room.
Muna said the cause of the accident was determined to be driver’s error.
In other news, a police vehicle veered off the highway in Puerto Rico and slammed into a concrete post on Thursday morning.
The driver, Police Officer 2 Eric F. David of the Boating Safety Section, was not injured.
The 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser with license plate GOV’T 21-79 sustained moderate damage on the driver’s side.
Investigation showed that David was driving the vehicle east direction and was negotiating the curve near the Army Reserve Center toward the traffic signal light when the accident happened at 7 a.m.
David immediately called DPS to report the incident.
Traffic investigators faulted the officer for driver error, saying he should have slowed down due to the bad weather condition and the wet roads.
