At Garapan Elementary School, principal Yvonne Reyes said they reduced the number of kindergarten students to 60 last year.
GES has only two kindergarten teachers for the morning and afternoon sessions.
GES, one of the biggest elementary schools on island, used to have over 100 kindergarten students.
“This is the second year that we will have only two kindergarten classes,” Reyes said. “Last year, we decreased our number to 60 and we intend to have the same figure this school year.”
She admitted that the possibility of increasing the number of kindergarten students is remote due to budget constraints.
At Koblerville Elementary School, principal Eric Evangelista said they can only have 40 kindergarten students. They have only one teacher for the morning and afternoon sessions.
“It’s first-come, first-served basis in Koblerville,” he told Variety.
At San Vicente Elementary School, principal Joaquina DLG. Salas said they will continue to have 80 kindergarten students.
San Vicente has two teachers for four kindergarten sessions each day using two classrooms.
Salas said the school will try not to put a child on the waiting list and will do its best to accommodate them all.
“That’s our intention,” she told Variety.
Dandan Elementary School, for it part, has two teachers for the kindergarten classes and the number of students may be increased from 15 to 20 per session.
DES will also try not to put any child on the standby list.
Oleai Elementary School, which had 60 kindergarten students last year, intends to maintain this number.
“We may accommodate less, but not more,” an OES staffer said.
