Projects and term papers required to pass a subject are additional reasons why students are “desperate” for laptops, she said.
Six of eight NMC students interviewed by this reporter said they will buy a second hand laptop even if it’s stolen.
Torres said some of her friends bought their laptop from pawnshops.
“The pawnshop management probably wouldn’t care if the computer was stolen,” she said.
A student of International Business and Professional College said he will buy a cheap laptop from a stranger without asking where it came from.
“It’s cheap. That’s the main reason why I’ll buy it,” he said.
Five of his classmates also agreed that once the laptop is sold, it doesn’t matter whether it’s stolen or not.
Some students said it is difficult to determine whether a laptop is stolen to begin with.
“I would not buy it if I know it’s stolen, but how would I know?” another IBPC student said.
However, all the students interviewed said they prefer to buy a stolen laptop than to steal one.
It is against the law to buy merchandise that the buyer knows was stolen.
